It's been such a long time since I've drawn Kendo or meerbats in general, I don't think the majority of my visitors now even knows who he is. Which is kind of a funny thought, considering meerbats were basically how I earned my spurs as an artist on the web. It's how I managed to make a name for myself, sort of. I still haven't actually gotten around to writing out any stories Kendo appears in (thus far they only exist in my head), I don't have any official profile description of him anywhere, yet amazingly he's still got a small but loyal fanbase. People hardly know his personality but seem to think he's cool nonetheless. It amuses me.
Part of the reason I haven't been drawing him much lately is because my style has changed over the years and I found it harder and harder to keep pinning down his looks. I was so strict on getting it just a certain way that it actually limited my expression. My style has become more free-flowing over time and Kendo's old design was more restrained. More perfectionist, like I used to be. It actually made my wrist ache trying to force myself to painstakingly trace the old look when my style just wasn't the same anymore.
I finally decided to allow myself some more freedom in adapting his design to my new style. Not that there's much difference now, I'm still working on it. The most noticeable thing is his eyes/eyebrows which are bigger and more expressive now. Kendo may be a serious person, but in order to keep him fun to draw, even he needs to learn to emote.
