A note on popularity

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 5, 2013, 7:28 PM

Someone recently told me they saw my Aladdin/AC crossover pics and that they weren't impressed. They seemed to be implying that I was "selling out" in order to get more views.

With regards to popularity: I am not in charge of what other users find fave-worthy. I never expected my silly crossover doodles to become as popular as they did. To me, art is about drawing what I want, not what other people want me to draw. That may sound cliché, but it's the truth. I draw a lot of fan art because it inspires me personally. I don't expect everyone to like it. If you're not impressed by my stuff, I'm sure there are lots of other (better) artists out there for you to follow.

P.S. Stop worrying so much about what makes it to the front page. We all know there's better stuff on DA that doesn't get enough attention. That's not the artists' fault. If I can live with all the fetish photography and inflation art, you can live with my crossover doodles for one day. ;)

There's only a few artists that actually make the front page. Who cares what one person thinks? Someone was obviously impressed, because you made it. ^^ (And p.s. I liked them)

Who cares what that ninny said? If they don't like it, then they can get lost. Other people love it.
I personally think it's damn brilliant!

I guess it's the business woman in me rather than the artist, but to that remark (and many others I've seen like it), my immediate response would be - so what? So what if you were doing it for the pageviews/popularity? For the artists out there who are trying to get some cash in their pocket, fanart is a good gateway to clientele. Or in my case, the thing I seek most is feedback so that I can improve - and the best way to get people to look at and comment on my work is to draw characters that are familiar to them (and it's more fun for me that way too, heh heh).

Draw your heart out. :) You're amazing at it.

Thank you very much for sharing this. Really kept me going on drawing... :')

I find that pretty funny 'cause I honestly never knew anyone has ever thought of an Aladdin/AC crossover... other than yourself.

You put it quite well when you noted that, "To me, art is about drawing what I want, not what other people want me to draw."

For someone like me who enjoys art and who enjoys drawing as well, your comment is spot on!

Art is self expression... which means art is personal... a reflection of us. The fun comes when observers try interpreting the art based on what they see, what they think, and past experiences. That's what makes art so special.

So, JessKat, please keep drawing what you want! I'm certainly enjoying it!

And, thank you for sharing your artistic world with us!

what did the artwork look like on their page I wonder? Do what you love

I LOVE your Aladdin and AC crossovers. But everyone has an opinion and while it's okay to state your opinion people do not have to be so MEAN about it.

Selling out? more like testing the waters! It seemed to me like you were seeing if your other ideas would be just as loved as the first one, just to be sure!
I don't think it's selling out if you run with an idea that proved to be a fantastic one!

I wouldn't even give said person the dignity of a response.

lol but really this is wonderful. Artists have such a hard time trying to please everyone else that they lose the happiness they get from creating what they want

You have no idea how much this journal made my day. It was just so well worded on this topic.

XD though the person who talked to you seems to have their terms a bit screwy; in order to "sell-out" doesn't someone need to know.. pay you?
I guess switching to fan art to get more popular is...kinda selling out? Personally I don't see it as that because you'd..only do fanart for something you liked I would hope...

-People are confusing-
Phantasim-Fan Featured By Owner Apr 8, 2013
The surprise success of the first one should make you proud there's no denying that.

Though I suppose the fact that it was almost instantly followed by two more could very easily be seen as a pull for more views. I know you drew those things because you liked them, but you don't need to hide it if you enjoyed getting some more faves out of it.

I'm a big fan of crossover pictures\. Heck, I draw a lot of them myself. So keep up the good work!
And yep, my fanart is more popular than my original work as well. But I've accepted that. I love to draw fanart and it can draw people's attention towards your original work as well :)

Selling Out? Sounds like someone is jealous that people like them. It's a cute idea, you can do whatever you want, and I know you didn't make these with the intent of drawing people, you just had a very funny and creatvie idea that people took to! As you said, you can't make people like stuff. Pft. People.
Shippuden23 Featured By Owner Apr 8, 2013
I don’t get how you’re “selling –out”, especially since you’re not getting any money from your ACXAladdin crossovers.

Some people really need to lighten up. Not everything an artist’s draws is for fame, popularity or money; sometimes it’s just for fun and , like you already said, you don’t have to try to please everyone.

Keep on keepin on, 'cause haters are going to definitely hate.
I will admit, I found you through the cross over picks and thought nothing more than "oh, this is fun and pretty darn creative!"
I stayed for the rest of your work, keep it up! :D

Why do people hate on artists who become popular because of "fan art" related deviations?

If you think about it, it's just good marketing.

Think of what people are searching on DA. Search engine results drive traffic. But, despite getting people to one's page, it is the quality of the work itself that causes people to "fave" and "watch" from there on.

So kudos to you for just being awesome. :D

"Why do people hate on artists who become popular because of "fan art" related deviations?

You just answered your own question. Some people think drawing fan art is not something the artists do for their own enjoyment but simply because they're trying to get popular.

It was supposed to be a somewhat rhetorical question to emphasize my other point lol

Jeez, they just sound petty. Those crossovers you've been doing are awesome and if you enjoy doing them then what's the problem? Besides, anyone would want to continue working on something if it's gets a lot of positive feedback, it feels good! If you constantly drew images of things you hate just for the accolades; that would be selling out.

Some people are just miseries >[

dang, i'm guilty and i wanted to change my ways... i used to be popular here in dA until i stopped 4 years ago.. my popularity went down when i changed what i draw.. i used to draw avAtar and anime stuff but i became fond of realism so i tried to develop it..i thought more people will like but i was wrong... i had a feeling of regret about changing my style but when i posted my drawings on facebook, i got so many comments and likes unlike here... i still felt the regret until i read this journal.. it kinda lifted myself into being me..i always wanted to be unique and i can be unique...thanks for writing this journal.. it inspired me to continue my new found love :)

Fan art will always be more popular than original work, unfortunately. I know it's difficult not to worry about other people's opinions, but I hope you'll keep on drawing what you enjoy the most.

:grump: haters are so annoying.
I liked the crossover! It was hilarious! and I never thought about Aladdin and AC together before, but it's so true! :D I wanted to see more :giggle: no joke. Seeing Aladdin's theft attempts being accidentally foiled by AC's assassinations and their chase scenes from 2 different law-groups messing each other up... in my head it got so much funnier :lmao:

but yeah, I was worried that if I made my own emoticons with a little sphere that resembled (with a hairstyle) my self-insert OC, I'd get ppl thinking less of me, but after letting it annoy me I decided to make them anyway. We should all draw what we want, not what everyone else thinks we should.
That's the meaning of art after all :D

Draw whatever you want to. People are just being weird, if they think that fan art is only drawn for attention. Particularly since, you know, you drew like two pieces?

I had a discussion about this with a very good friend of mine recently. I honestly do not know where people get off thinking they have a right to tell an artist what you should or shouldn't be drawing, as though any artist they come across is their personal drawing mule?!
(unless they're a commissioner; then obviously you sort of expect them to tell you what they want drawn lol)

Personally I don't bother even looking at the front page anymore, because; let's face it; it's always the same crap! I follow your gallery anyway; but I can honestly say it's refreshing to see work like yours on the front page!

Plus I think it's absolutely ridiculous that artists keep having to explain themselves like this whenever something of theirs makes it to the front page, it honestly makes me want to slam my head into the desk as it's a stark reminder of just how many morons there are on this site ¬_¬

Keep up the great work! Your art is fantastic :)

Here here! I used to draw a lot of fanart, but that was because I liked the characters, and I never expected anything to hit the front page because usually they were silly doodles. Besides, one needs only to do a quick browse through your gallery to see that there is so much more variety in your work. You have a fantastic style and I love your art so much, regardless of what it's about. Ignore those people, haters gonna hate and all that jazz.

You tell em', girl. You're just tellin' it like it is! It's true. Sad, but true, that what makes it to the front page normally is fetish art and fan art. They're not necessarily bad things. Art is art no matter what kind it is and yeah, it's going to make it to the front page if it gets enough comments and views. And these, contrary to popular belief, aren't always positive responses to said popular art.

Having said that, I do like that there's always the option to say something about what it is you're looking at. That is if the artist left the comments enabled (I hate it when they disable them for some reason or another). Even if you don't like something, you can always say it. Communicating your liking of something or lack there of is a means of closure. You're finding closure with that art that has affected you in some way, be it positive or negative. And then you can move on with your life. Otherwise, that thing's nagging at you all day. And there's so many things you want to say, but can't. Ugh. It's frustrating, lmao.

((Seriously, though. You hit the nail on the head. People shouldn't be getting all butt hurt over a little crossover parody or crack pairing when there's billions of more shocking things on the front page every day.))
Quixotic-Quidam Featured By Owner Apr 5, 2013
Maybe they are popular because they are actually fun to look at, I think that person who complained needs to go back to looking at the fetish arts :giggle:

Your crossovers are brilliant. I'd love to see more. I don't know who in their right mind feels that they can go up to someone and tell them that they aren't impressed with someones work. That's awfully rude of them.
